I counted 18 oil rigs visible from my spot in Fort Morgan, all still operating as far as I could tell. Who thought it was a good idea to drill oil in same place we catch seafood? Obviously no one, there’s just money in it for those who can numb their minds and hearts from the consequences of their actions/inactions, and subsequently forget that the seafood that shows up on their dinner plate swims in the same ocean they’re polluting. You poison the earth, you poison yourself. One day we’ll learn (we being Society, Civilization, the collective social agreements that shape what is and is not acceptable), and if we don’t then we’ll get kicked out of this great circle of life and perhaps the next beings intelligent enough to recognize the ruins of our creation for what they are might learn how the ruins became ruins before falling into the same destructive cycles that we find ourselves in today.
And still, among the oil and pollution, the planetary cycles of life, death, decay, and growth, there are the waves, there is the setting sun, and the fiery sky painted with the silhouettes of airborne wanderers. If you have the fortune of standing on the gulf shores of Alabama, there are also sand crabs that you can chase, and in their skittering evasions of your towering form you may spot hints of delight, told in the only way sand crabs might tell humans that they’re having fun. This is a lively world we live in. It is a world of beauty and ugliness, horror and delight, and of photos taken in just the right manner such that you look like you’ve lost an arm.

and when that time comes, you’ll look back at the crabs on the beach
and wish that you’d noticed their liveliness, their beauty, and the delight
that was right in front of you, sitting at your feet, waiting for you to dance alongside it ❤
